Back in September, the Hawks looked to be in a great position having won 7 games on the bounce, but after travelling to Finchley to face a struggling to Enfield Borough side, they were left scratching their heads wondering what went wrong, as they were beaten with the extra man.
Since that game, the Hawks have lost just once in the league, namely against title rivals Hackney Wick, and yesterday’s game marked their revenge against Enfield Borough, defeating them 3-1 at the Pardus Wealth Stadium.
Harlow started the game emphatically, and really should have been a few goals up in the opening 20 minutes, with Denzel Effah and Jordan Burnett wreaking havoc down the wings, and delivering numerous crosses into the box, to little avail from the forwards.
Of the chances, Fred Agyemang hit the first on target for the reds, as he was denied from close range by former Hawk Oren Campbell. An ambitious effort from Syrus Gordon from distance followed, that was always rising, before James Folkes almost opened scoring with a header from a corner that sailed just over.
After another ambitious effort from Syrus Gordon in almost identical fashion to the previous one, Jack Zielinski headed into the grasp of Campbell after being picked out from an Arley Barker free kick.
Enfield Borough had their first chance of the game after winning a free kick on the edge of Harlow’s box, but Aundre Spencer saw his strike blocked by the wall, with his follow-up effort lacking power and James Pellin collected easily.
Fred Agyemang had to score after being found by Denzel Effah with a squared pass, however the striker struggled to find his feet and as a result brushed the shot just wide.
Harlow’s early pressure finally paid off after Jordan Burnett hit a ‘half shot, half cross’ into the woodwork and Agyemang was there to head home the rebound, giving Harlow a lead late in the first half.
As seems to always be the case in recent times, Harlow went and quickly doubled their advantage just minutes later after James Folkes headed home beautifully from Arley Barker’s corner, well beyond the reach of Campbell, for his seventh goal of the season from centre-back.
Harlow had absolutely dominated the first half, and if their finishing had been better, they could have been up by five or more at the break.
It looked like Harlow would make it three after Jordan Burnett rinsed David Gillespie on the right-hand side, before cutting it back to Arley Barker, who’s effort was good but just missed the target, curling wide.
Korede Da Silva looked to add a third for Harlow, striking a half-volley in space, but his effort was just over the bar.
The third goal did eventually come, as Jordan Burnett picked out Jack Zielinski, who headed it straight at Campbell, and knocked home the rebound, almost ending any chance of a comeback for the away side.
Enfield Borough kept plugging away and won a free kick, which Alex Mansaray hit wide. Down the other end, Arley Barker hit a free kick on target, which Campbell parried into the path of Jack Zielinski, who hit it into orbit on his left foot.
Mansaray nearly caused damage to Harlow after his next free kick hit the target, but James Pellin was able to stop it in the top-left well.
After his introduction from the bench, Emre Baram had begun to cause problems for Harlow, and was looking lively, getting a shot away early, and making his intentions clear to the Harlow defence. His shot, though, was far from hitting the target on this occasion.
After a few end-to-end moments, including Jordan Burnett nutmegging Myles Baiden and running in on goal, Emre Baram’s threat had paid off after he was found with a squared pass and secured a consolation goal for the away side.
It was simply too late for any possible comeback after the goal, and Harlow went on to comfortably win the game 3-1.
Jordan Burnett went on to win player of the match, as voted for by the supporters, closely followed by Denzel Effah and Arley Barker, all of whom were fantastic, and the entire squad played really well throughout the game, with the only real concern coming down to clinicality in front of goal. The win sees us head top of the league, one point in front of Hackney Wick after 19 games each.
We thank you for your continued support, as our home attendance was the highest in step 6 once again, it really does not go unnoticed. We hope to see you in our next game, as we travel to Coggeshall Town next Saturday, kicking off at 3pm.
